What is SEO and how it works - any ideas?

If I mention SEO to anyone, they look at me completely blank as If I've gone mad.  What is SEO? they say. It's fair to say, that unless you're in business for yourself or trying to promote something, you wouldn't have a clue. So I shall try to explain.

Think of it like this . . .

Let's assume for a moment that you have a website. It's beautiful, and you're really quite proud of it, but who gets to see this wonderful work of art? Unfortunately, the buck doesn't quite stop there. Just because it's on the internet, doesn't mean you're future customers, or potential clients will see it. You need them to find you, in the maze of websites that live on the net. So how do we do that? you ask.

The tech term is SEO. Search engine optimization. A bit of a mouthful, hence the tech term.  Using search engine optimization services ensures that search engines, find your content. Search engines look for words and phrases, used by people, to find services and products, and then show them in the search results. How high your website will actually rank in the results, will depend on a lot of things, but SEO will give you a fighting chance to stay ahead of the game.

So how does it work?

Let’s begin with the site engine. In basic terms, we are looking at Google, Bing, AOL, etc. These are all search engines. You input information into the browser bar. (You know, that blank space at the top of your screen) and search for something. In this case, " What is SEO. " You found my site, brilliant! but how did that happen? Well, that job is done by web spiders. Much like bees to honey, spiders (also known as robots, amongst other names) crawl the web to find what you are looking for.

So if you own a website, it will be crawled by web spiders. They will gather information to store in a searchable database. Indexing words and content, and checking links on your site. This process will enable the search engines to then provide a list of websites that are relevant in the search results. ie to your potential audience.

So, what is SEO? The process of driving people to your website.

Therefore, as you can see, it is important that the content on your website is relevant to your business, to attract traffic to your site. In the same breath though you mustn’t sacrifice the content of your site for SEO. The customer always comes first, and you need to keep them interested and happy. After all, you want them to come back, don't you?

All websites at Just Click Website Design are optimized before they go live. SEO is an ongoing thing and it pays to keep on top of it. Your organic (unpaid) search results will fluctuate. You may get to a point when you aren't seeing the results you would like. This may be because the trend has changed, or the keywords you are optimized for might be too competitive. Therefore your SEO will need to be improved.

You might decide to use a specialist company or try your own hand at a Google Adwords campaign. A service provided by Google. It allows you to bid on clickable ads that relate to the services, or products you are offering. This works via keywords that your potential customers are searching for. (the keyword here, for example, is, "what is SEO") It can work really well for businesses to boost their SEO power, although it can prove to be quite costly in the long run.
